Grow storage online: hardened, fully patched enterprise Linux with an LVM root, AlmaLinux 10.
AlmaLinux 10 with an LVM root filesystem
AlmaLinux 10 is a community-owned enterprise Linux distribution, produced by the AlmaLinux OS Foundation to be binary compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. It runs the 6.12 kernel and follows the RHEL 10 lifecycle, with active support to May 2030 and security support to May 2035. In this image the root filesystem lives on an LVM logical volume (volume group almalinux, logical volume root, XFS) instead of a fixed partition, so you can extend it online after enlarging the disk, add capacity from new data disks and manage storage with the standard LVM tools. The EFI and /boot partitions stay plain partitions, and there is no swap volume. It tracks the AlmaLinux 10 major release, brought fully up to date at build time.
Built from the official media, standard package set
AlmaLinux does not publish an LVM image, so cloudimg builds this one from the official AlmaLinux 10 installation media with an automated install that reproduces the package set and Azure guest configuration of the standard AlmaLinux 10 Azure image, checked package for package. The Hyper-V storage and network drivers are built into the boot image, and every boot entry, including those for future kernel updates, carries the argument that locates the root volume.
Hardened and current at capture
Every available update is applied at build time and again immediately before capture, and an automated gate blocks capture if any update remains outstanding, so the image ships fully patched. dnf-automatic, which the standard AlmaLinux 10 Azure image does not include, is installed and armed to apply all available updates on a timer (never auto-rebooting), so instances keep patching themselves.
Secure by default
No credential is baked into the image: the root password is locked, password and keyboard-interactive authentication are disabled and root cannot log in over SSH, so access is only ever by the SSH key you supply when you create the VM. The machine identity and SSH host keys are regenerated uniquely on every instance. SSH on port 22 is the only network listener, rpcbind ships disabled, SELinux is left enforcing, and the BaseOS, AppStream, CRB and Extras update path is intact with GPG signature checking on.
