Privacy-first self-hosted PDF toolkit: merge, split, compress and edit PDFs in your browser
BentoPDF on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
BentoPDF is an open-source, self-hosted PDF toolkit that runs as a single web app. It brings together more than sixty tools for working with PDF documents - merge and split, compress, convert to and from images, rotate, reorder, delete and extract pages, add watermarks, stamps, page numbers and bookmarks, fill and sign, redact, compare, and adjust permissions and metadata.
BentoPDF is privacy-first by design: every core operation runs entirely inside your own web browser, so your documents are processed on your own machine and are never uploaded to a server. It suits legal, finance, healthcare and administrative teams, and anyone who regularly assembles, edits or prepares PDF documents and wants a single self-hosted toolkit they fully control.
Secure by default
BentoPDF has no built-in login of its own, so this cloudimg image gates the whole app behind per-VM HTTP Basic-Auth at nginx. A unique administrative password is generated on the first boot of every instance and written to a root-only file, so no two instances share a credential and the toolkit is never left anonymously open. A public, unauthenticated health endpoint is exposed at /healthz for load-balancer probing.
Why cloudimg
The image is hardened and fully patched, pinned to a known BentoPDF release and served as static files by nginx, so the toolkit answers in the browser the moment the instance boots. unattended-upgrades keeps the OS current, every deployment is paired with a step-by-step deployment guide, and it is backed by 24/7 expert support.
Licensing and pricing
BentoPDF is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 (AGPL-3.0) and is free. The cloudimg charge of $0.04 per vCPU/hour covers packaging, security patching, image maintenance and 24/7 support. The Corresponding Source for the packaged version is published upstream and linked from the guide.
Getting started
Recommended size Standard_B2s (the app serves static files and does its PDF work in the browser, so it is light on server resources). Prerequisites: an Azure subscription, a VNet and subnet, and an SSH key. Allow ports 22 and 80 from your networks; front port 80 with TLS and your own domain for production.
