Eclipse Jetty 12 on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Eclipse Jetty is a lightweight, embeddable Java HTTP server and Jakarta Servlet/JSP container - the runtime teams choose when Apache Tomcat or WildFly are heavier than a workload needs, and a common embedded application server behind Java microservices. This cloudimg image installs the official jetty-home 12.0.37 distribution (Jakarta EE10, Servlet 6.0) on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with OpenJDK 21, pinned by exact version and verified against a sha256 checksum.

Because Jetty is a web application server, this image ships a genuinely browsable web UI: a cloudimg-branded landing page at the server root, rendered by the JSP container with a live server timestamp and per-request counter, plus Jetty's own standard demo web applications pre-deployed - a flagship demo webapp (Hello-World servlet, request / session / cookie dump servlets, Comet chat and WebSocket examples) and a JSP / JSTL demo webapp - so you can point a browser at the VM and click through real, working example apps. The HTTP connector is bound to loopback only, with nginx fronting it on port 80 and an unauthenticated health check endpoint for load balancers. Deploying your own application is a one-line drop of a WAR file, which Jetty hot-deploys automatically without a restart.

Application data, webapps and logs live on a dedicated 20 GiB Azure data disk, independent of the OS disk and independently resizable.
