Foswiki is an open source structured wiki for documentation and knowledge bases.
Foswiki 2.1 on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
The free and open source enterprise wiki. Foswiki organises knowledge as topics written in a compact wiki markup, keeps every save in a full revision history, and lets you turn ordinary pages into structured data with forms, queries and macros. Teams use it for engineering documentation, knowledge bases, requirement registers and internal intranets. This image is built and maintained by cloudimg on a hardened, fully patched Ubuntu 24.04 LTS base.
What's included
- Foswiki 2.1.11 installed from the upstream release tarball, verified by checksum
- A persistent FastCGI backend on loopback with nginx as the single public listener on port 80
- Foswiki's native flat file store, so there is no database server to run, tune or patch
- A dedicated Azure data disk holding every topic, its revision history, attachments and logs
- A wiki administrator account generated uniquely on the first boot of every VM
- 24/7 cloudimg support
Secure by default
- The administrative configure console is unreachable without a per VM credential, and requires an administrator session behind that
- Self registration is disabled, so the first visitor cannot create themselves an account
- The shared internal administrator login is disabled outright
- Passwords are hashed with bcrypt
- Anonymous visitors can read the wiki but cannot create, edit, attach or rename
Getting started
Launch the VM, allow inbound 80 and 22, then read the generated administrator password from /root/foswiki-credentials.txt over SSH and sign in. The deployment guide covers creating topics, revision history, adding users, the configure console and putting TLS in front.
Licensing
Foswiki is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or any later version, at no cost. The cloudimg hourly charge covers packaging, security patching, image maintenance and 24/7 expert support.
