GoBGP on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS by cloudimg
GoBGP is a fast, open source implementation of BGP from the osrg project. It runs as a single daemon, gobgpd, driven by a plain-text TOML configuration file and a gRPC API, with a companion gobgp CLI for everyday operation. It speaks BGP to your routers as a peer and can act as a programmable route server, route reflector, edge speaker or route injector that pushes prefixes into your network from software.
A complete, working reference deployment
A bare BGP daemon has nothing to show on its own, so this image ships a self-contained, provably-working BGP reference deployment on the one VM: a primary gobgpd (AS 65001) that you drive with gobgp, and a demo peer gobgpd (AS 65002) it peers with. A real eBGP session between them reaches ESTABLISHED, routes propagate, and an import policy filters a blackholed prefix — all visible from the CLI the moment the VM boots.
Secure by default, no baked credential
The gRPC API is bound to the loopback interface rather than the world-facing default, and the BGP listener is kept off the public interface until you add a peer of your own. GoBGP has no login of its own; the only secret on the appliance is the TCP-MD5 key that authenticates the demo session, generated uniquely on every first boot and written to a root-only file, so no two instances share a secret.
What you get
- GoBGP 4.7.0, pinned to the official upstream release binary and verified by SHA-256
- A working authenticated eBGP session, propagated routes and a live import policy
- gRPC API on loopback, BGP off the public interface — secure by default
- Runs as an unprivileged system account with only the two capabilities it needs
- Fully patched at build time with unattended security updates enabled
- A paired deployment guide and 24/7 cloudimg support
