Homebox on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Homebox is the open source, self hosted home inventory and organisation system maintained by the sysadminsmedia community. Catalogue everything you own with photos, receipts, purchase details, warranties and custom fields, organised into nested locations and labels. Print QR asset labels for bins and shelves, log maintenance and repairs, track warranty expiry, and import or export your whole inventory as CSV. Multi user groups let a household share one inventory with invitation links.

Homebox is written in Go as a single binary with the web app and an embedded SQLite database compiled in, so it is tiny, fast and simple to operate. The cloudimg image runs Homebox natively as a systemd service bound to the loopback interface, fronted by nginx with TLS on ports 80 and 443. A per VM self signed certificate is generated on the first boot of every VM, and the image ships with an empty database, so the very first person to open the site registers the owner account. There are no default credentials of any kind.

All customer data, the SQLite database plus every uploaded photo and attachment, lives on a dedicated Azure data disk under /var/lib/homebox, re-provisioned with every VM and simple to back up. Ubuntu unattended-upgrades keeps the operating system patched automatically on your running VM.

Licensing: AGPL 3.0, free. The cloudimg charge covers packaging, security patching, image maintenance and 24/7 support. Recommended size Standard_B2s. Deploy the VM, open HTTPS to its public IP, register your owner account, and start cataloguing your belongings. Full deployment guide: https://www.cloudimg.co.uk/guides/homebox-on-ubuntu-24-04-azure/.
