Offline-first learning platform for schools and community sites
Kolibri on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
Kolibri, from the non-profit Learning Equality, is an open-source learning platform built for places where connectivity is scarce, expensive or unreliable. One Kolibri server holds a library of open educational content - videos, exercises, documents and interactive HTML5 activities - imported from the Kolibri Studio catalogue or from a local drive, and serves it over the network to any device with a browser. Learners work through lessons and quizzes and their progress is recorded even when the server has no internet at all.
The platform ships three roles in one application. Learners browse the library and complete assigned material. Coaches group learners into classes, assign lessons and quizzes drawn from the imported channels, and follow progress reports per learner and per exercise. Administrators manage the facility, its users and permissions, and choose which content channels are available. Because everything runs from the one server, a school, training centre, clinic or field office can keep teaching with no connectivity at all.
What this image gives you
- Kolibri 0.19.5 installed from the official upstream PyPI wheel, pinned so it never silently upgrades
- The learner, coach and administrator web interface on port 8080, and Kolibri's separate sandboxed origin for interactive HTML5 and EPUB content on port 8081
- A per-VM administrator account created on first boot, with a random password written to a root-only file, so every VM is secured independently and no default login ships
- A per-VM application signing key, replacing the single published key that upstream Kolibri uses on every installation, so signed values from one VM are worthless on another
- Anonymous account sign-up and password-free learner sign-in both disabled by default
- Kolibri running as an unprivileged service account under a systemd unit that will not start until first-boot provisioning has completed
- A fully patched Ubuntu 24.04 LTS base with unattended security upgrades enabled
- A step-by-step deployment guide and 24/7 cloudimg support
Licensing and pricing
Kolibri is MIT-licensed and free: there is no per-seat, per-site or per-learner fee. The cloudimg charge of $0.04 per vCPU/hour covers packaging, security patching, image maintenance and 24/7 expert support.
Getting started
Launch on Standard_B2s or larger and size the OS disk for the content channels you intend to import. Allow ports 8080 and 8081 to your learners and port 22 to your administrators. Read the per-VM administrator credentials from the root-only credentials file, sign in, then import your first channel from Device then Channels then Import.
