Kuvasz Uptime Monitoring on Ubuntu 24.04

by cloudimg

Kuvasz monitors your websites and APIs for downtime and expiring SSL certificates.

Kuvasz is a free and open source, self hosted uptime and SSL monitoring service. It checks your websites, APIs and internal services over HTTP, ICMP ping and push heartbeats, at intervals as short as five seconds, and records every state change as an incident you can look back over with uptime ratio, downtime and latency percentiles. Alongside availability it watches the SSL certificate behind each HTTPS monitor and warns you before it expires, which is the failure most teams only notice once customers do.

Alerting is configured per monitor rather than globally, so a noisy internal check and a customer facing endpoint can route to different places: email, Slack, Discord, Telegram, PagerDuty, Microsoft Teams or any custom webhook. Maintenance windows, one off or on a recurring schedule, pause the affected checks so planned work never pages anyone. Public or private status pages share the picture with customers or a team, and Prometheus and OpenTelemetry exporters feed the same signals into an existing observability stack. Everything is also available through a full REST API, and monitors and notification channels can be declared as code in a YAML file, so a whole monitoring estate can live in version control and be reproduced exactly.

This cloudimg image runs Kuvasz 4.1.0 unmodified as the official upstream container, pinned by image digest, with PostgreSQL 16 on a private container network. Host nginx is the single public listener on port 80; the application is published to loopback only and the database is never on a host port at all. Both containers carry fixed memory ceilings and the Java heap is capped explicitly, so the whole stack fits the recommended virtual machine size with room to spare and no swap is used or shipped.

The image is secure by default and carries no credential of any kind. There is no database, no monitor and no account inside it. On first boot, before the public port is ever opened, each virtual machine generates its own administrator password, its own REST API key and its own PostgreSQL password into a root only file, and the public listener is held shut until those credentials have been proven to authenticate. The documented example values and the project's public demo login never exist on your deployment.

Kuvasz is distributed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3, free and open source with no per monitor or per user fee. cloudimg is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the Kuvasz project; Kuvasz is a mark of its owners. cloudimg provides packaging, the secure by default configuration, security patching, and 24/7 support with a guaranteed 24 hour response SLA.
