Livebook interactive Elixir notebook on Ubuntu 24.04, preconfigured by cloudimg, 24/7 support
Livebook is the open source interactive and collaborative notebook for Elixir. You combine code cells written in Elixir and Erlang, Markdown prose, live inputs, data tables and charts in one reproducible document, and the BEAM virtual machine runs each cell as real code so notebooks are always live rather than static. Notebooks are plain text .livemd files that are easy to share and version. This image is built and maintained by cloudimg on a hardened, fully patched Ubuntu 24.04 LTS base: Livebook 0.19.8 runs on Erlang/OTP 28 and Elixir 1.20, served over HTTPS the moment the VM boots, and is used for data exploration, prototyping, teaching, building internal tools and producing reproducible reports.
Because Livebook executes arbitrary code, an open Livebook is effectively remote code execution, so this image is secure by default. A unique access password is generated on the first boot of every VM and written to a root only file, with no default or blank password ever baked into the image. Livebook's own password authentication is the trust wall: unauthenticated requests are redirected to a sign in page and only a session holding the per VM password is granted access. A per VM self signed TLS certificate is also generated on first boot.
The Livebook server binds to the loopback interface only and is never exposed directly to the network. An nginx reverse proxy terminates HTTPS on port 443 in front of it, forwarding the WebSocket connections that Livebook's live collaborative sessions use, with port 80 issuing a redirect to HTTPS and an unauthenticated health endpoint provided for load balancer probes. For production you can place your own domain and a CA signed certificate in front while keeping Livebook bound to loopback.
Your notebooks and Livebook's internal data live on a single dedicated managed data disk kept separate from the operating system disk, so your work rides with the VM and can be resized or snapshotted independently. A sample welcome notebook ships on the data disk, and you add your own .livemd notebooks alongside it. The notebook runtime spawns a fresh Elixir process on the BEAM per session, so cell evaluation runs in isolation from the Livebook server itself.
