NextGIS Web 5.5 on Ubuntu 24.04

by cloudimg

Store geospatial data and publish it as web maps and OGC services.

NextGIS Web is an open source Web GIS server. You upload vector and raster data, style it, assemble web maps that render in the browser with a layer tree, feature identification, attribute tables and search, and serve the same data as standard OGC endpoints for desktop GIS clients such as QGIS and ArcGIS. Everything lives in one PostgreSQL and PostGIS database plus a file store, so the resource tree, users, permissions and geometry sit together in a single system you administer.

Standing NextGIS Web up means assembling a Python application, a PostGIS database, a web tier and the rendering stack it draws maps through, then wiring them together and proving they work. This cloudimg image ships that stack assembled and proven.

What you get

  • NextGIS Web 5.5.0, the Pyramid based Web GIS server, served by waitress behind nginx
  • The MapServer rendering extension, so vector layers draw as real map tiles in the web map viewer
  • PostgreSQL 16 with PostGIS 3.4, holding the resource tree, accounts, permissions and your spatial data
  • A demo vector web map, published and rendering an actual map the first time you sign in
  • A dedicated data disk carrying both the file storage and the whole database cluster
  • A paired step by step deployment guide and 24/7 cloudimg support

Secure by default

The database is reachable only from the machine itself and the application worker listens on the loopback interface, so nginx is the single public listener. NextGIS Web ships a documented default administrator account; on this image that default never exists. The administrator password is generated uniquely on the first boot of your VM and written to a root only file, and the web front door stays closed until that secret exists. The database uses local peer authentication, so no database password is stored anywhere in the image.

Publishing your own work

NextGIS Web keeps everything as resources in a tree. Upload a vector or raster layer, give it a style, add it to a web map, and set who can see it. The guide covers creating your own layers and web maps, publishing WMS and WFS services for desktop GIS clients, adding users and groups, and putting your own domain and TLS in front.

Licensing

NextGIS Web is an open source project of NextGIS, distributed under the GNU General Public License version 3. PostgreSQL, PostGIS and MapServer are distributed under their own permissive open source licences. There is no licence fee for any of them. The cloudimg charge of $0.04 per vCPU per hour covers packaging, security patching, image maintenance and 24/7 support. cloudimg is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by NextGIS.
