NZBGet on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Efficient NZBGet Usenet downloader with a full web interface, secured with a per instance login
NZBGet is a free, open source binary downloader for Usenet, written in C++ for efficiency so it downloads and processes NZB files quickly while using very little memory and CPU. This image runs the NZBGet daemon and exposes its full functionality through a modern browser based web interface: add NZB files by upload or URL, organise downloads into categories, control speed and scheduling, watch download and post processing progress in real time, and let NZBGet verify, repair and unpack completed downloads automatically. It connects to your own Usenet provider over a secure outbound connection, delivering a fast, private, self hosted download manager you run and control yourself, operational within minutes of launch.
Secure by default
A downloader with an open web interface would let anyone who can reach it control your downloads. NZBGet ships with a well known default password; this image never keeps it. Authentication is required for every request, and a unique control password is generated on each virtual machine's first boot and written to a root only file. There are no shared or default credentials baked into the image, so no two deployments are ever the same.
Hardened and ready on first boot
- The web interface is served on port 80 by nginx, which reverse proxies to the NZBGet daemon bound to the loopback address on port 6789, so the daemon itself is never directly exposed.
- The download queue, intermediate files and completed downloads live on a dedicated data disk mounted at /var/lib/nzbget, provisioned automatically with every VM.
- NZBGet reaches your Usenet provider over an outbound connection, so no inbound download port needs to be opened.
- NZBGet runs as an unprivileged system user under a hardened systemd unit, and an unauthenticated health endpoint is provided for load balancer probes.
