OvenMediaEngine on Ubuntu 24.04

by cloudimg

Open source OvenMediaEngine sub-second-latency live streaming server on Ubuntu 24.04: RTMP/SRT/WebRTC in, LLHLS/WebRTC out

OvenMediaEngine is the open source sub-second-latency live streaming server by AirenSoft. A publisher such as OBS Studio, ffmpeg or a hardware encoder pushes a live feed over RTMP, SRT, WebRTC or MPEG-TS, and OvenMediaEngine repackages it in real time for delivery over WebRTC and Low-Latency HLS, so viewers watch with end to end latency measured in fractions of a second rather than the many seconds of conventional HLS. It suits interactive live streaming, real time auctions, live commerce, remote production and e-sports.

This cloudimg image runs the official, unmodified upstream release — the container airensoft/ovenmediaengine at the pinned version v0.20.5, pulled straight from Docker Hub and baked into the image — driven entirely by external configuration; the AGPL source is never rebuilt or patched. The default application does pass-through packaging, repackaging the ingested H.264 and AAC without CPU heavy transcoding, so it runs comfortably on a small VM; size up for transcoding and adaptive bitrate.

The hub is secure by default. The only secret OvenMediaEngine needs is its REST API access token, and no fixed token ships. On the first boot of every VM a token unique to that VM is generated into a root only file, and the streaming service is held back until that token exists, so no instance ever runs with a shared or baked in credential. The REST API is bound to the loopback interface. nginx on port 80 serves an unauthenticated health probe, reverse proxies the Low-Latency HLS server, and hosts a small self contained demo player. ffmpeg ships in the image and a built in self test proves a real publish and playback round trip on every instance.

OvenMediaEngine is AGPL-3.0, free and open source with no per user or per deployment fee; the complete Corresponding Source is the upstream release the image is built from, published by AirenSoft. cloudimg provides packaging, per instance API token generation, the health probe and demo player, security patching and 24/7 support with a guaranteed 24 hour response SLA. OvenMediaEngine is an independent open source project by AirenSoft and this image is not affiliated with or endorsed by the OvenMediaEngine project.
