Percona Server for PostgreSQL 18
Percona Server for PostgreSQL is Percona's freely distributed distribution of PostgreSQL: the same upstream engine your applications already target, packaged with the production extension set that most teams otherwise assemble by hand. Client drivers, SQL, extensions and on disk format are all stock PostgreSQL, so moving a workload in or out is a restore rather than a rewrite. Everything is installed from Percona's own package repository onto a hardened, fully patched Ubuntu 24.04 LTS base.
Observability and compliance in the box
pg_stat_monitor, Percona's replacement for pg_stat_statements, is pre loaded and enabled. It aggregates query statistics into time buckets and records client, plan and histogram detail, so you can see not just which statements are slow but when and from where. pgAudit is pre loaded and configured to record schema and role changes. pg_repack for online bloat removal and wal2json for logical replication feeds are installed and ready to enable.
Secure by default, with no database in the image
Most database images ship a ready made cluster and rotate its password on first boot. This one ships no cluster at all, so there is no default account and no seeded password anywhere in the image. On first boot each VM runs initdb to build a brand new cluster on its dedicated data volume, mints a unique superuser password and a unique TLS certificate, and writes them to a root only file. The database service is enabled so it survives every reboot, but it is gated on a marker that first boot writes only after those credentials exist, so an uninitialised cluster can never be served. No host based trust rule ships anywhere: local access is peer authenticated and every remote connection requires TLS plus a password.
