Remark42 -- a self hosted comment section you fully own
Remark42 is a lightweight, open source, self hosted commenting engine. Embed it in any page with a small snippet of JavaScript: readers get threaded discussions, replies, voting, markdown and RSS, and you get a moderation plane to pin, block and remove content.
It is deliberately small: a single static Go binary with the web frontend compiled in, and an embedded BoltDB file as its entire data tier. No separate database server and no third party holding your readers' conversations. It suits blogs, documentation and publishing sites, and anyone replacing a hosted comment widget with a discussion layer they fully own.
This cloudimg image runs Remark42 1.16.4 from the pinned upstream release binary, verified against its published checksum. The engine is bound to loopback behind nginx on port 80, which also serves an unauthenticated health endpoint for load balancer probes, so there is no second public listener to secure.
Secure by default: the image ships no working credential at all. On first boot every VM generates its own random JWT signing key and admin password into a root only file, and Remark42 refuses to start until both exist. Readers can comment immediately via the built in anonymous provider, with no external OAuth application to register; the guide covers adding OAuth or email sign in for production.
Remark42 is MIT licensed and free to use; the cloudimg charge covers packaging, security patching, image maintenance and 24/7 support. This image is provided by cloudimg and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Remark42 project.
