rumqttd on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

rumqttd is a fast, lightweight MQTT broker written in Rust, from the rumqtt project. MQTT is the de facto publish and subscribe protocol for Internet of Things and telemetry, moving small messages between many devices and back end services with minimal overhead. This cloudimg image runs rumqttd 0.20.0 on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS as a single static binary under systemd, running as an unprivileged user, security patched and kept current by unattended upgrades.

The broker is configured to be secure by default. Authentication is enforced on every connection: the broker requires a username and password and rejects any anonymous or wrong credential connection. A unique broker credential is generated on this virtual machine's first boot and written to a root only file, so no two deployments share a password and nothing usable is baked into the image. Only the MQTT listener on TCP 1883 is exposed; the internal console and metrics endpoints are not.

Use this image as a ready message backbone for IoT device messaging, telemetry and event ingestion, and publish and subscribe messaging between your services. The paired deployment guide walks through reading the per VM credential, running an authenticated publish and subscribe round trip, confirming anonymous access is rejected, and adding your own users and TLS.
