Advanced-Hardened image for Microsoft Windows Server 2025 Datacenter - DISA STIG + Entra ID Login

by Madarson It, LLC

DISA STIG-hardened image for Windows Server 2025 with Entra ID login. Federal-grade controls plus modern identity-based access for DoD workloads.

This Azure-based VM combines an advanced-hardened Microsoft Windows Server 2025 Datacenter image aligned with the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIG) with native Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) login support.

Federal agencies and defense contractors face a difficult choice: apply the DISA STIG hardening their auditors demand, or enable modern Microsoft Entra ID identity management - because the same security controls that satisfy STIG typically break Entra ID login. This image solves that trade-off. Deploy a server that ships STIG-aligned and audit-ready, with the standard DoD warning banner active from first boot, and sign in to it using your Entra ID accounts with MFA and Conditional Access.

Key Benefits:
  • STIG and Entra ID Together: Eliminate the trade-off between federal-grade hardening and modern identity-based access.
  • Sign In with Your Corporate Identity: Replace shared local administrator passwords with named Entra ID accounts, enforcing MFA on every server login.
  • Conditional Access Ready: Enforce access policies by location, device compliance, and risk level - even on STIG-hardened servers.
  • Standard DoD Warning Banner: Mandatory U.S. Government notice and consent banner displayed before authentication.
  • Audit-Ready Out of the Box: Aligned with DISA STIG, NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF), and FedRAMP baseline alignment.
  • Reduces ATO Timelines: Skip weeks of manual hardening and pre-applied technical controls accelerate ATO and accreditation packages.

What It Solves:
  • The "STIG hardening breaks Entra login" problem teams hit on federal projects
  • Shared local admin passwords sprawling across regulated environments
  • Audit findings on MFA enforcement and centralized identity in DoD systems
  • Weeks of manual hardening on every new federal-grade server deployment
  • Delays in Authority to Operate (ATO) timelines driven by manual configuration

Use Cases:
  • U.S. Government and Department of Defense jump boxes with Entra-based access
  • Federal contractor systems requiring STIG alignment plus centralized identity
  • Privileged Access Workstations (PAW) for regulated workloads
  • Defense Industrial Base secure administrative workstations
  • ATO-eligible workloads with Conditional Access requirements

Ideal For:
  • Federal agencies needing both STIG compliance and Entra-based access control
  • Government contractors managing access via Microsoft Entra ID
  • Defense Industrial Base organizations with modern identity infrastructure
  • Security teams pursuing ATO accreditation with MFA enforcement
  • Hybrid workloads bridging on-premise and cloud identity

Getting Started:

Deploy from Azure Marketplace using a VM name of 15 characters or fewer (Windows naming limit). Connect to your VM via Remote Desktop as localadmin, then run the included setup script at C:\MIT\MIT_Customer_EntraSetup.ps1 which configures Entra ID login and assigns access to your users. After a reboot, sign in to the server with your Entra ID account using Remote Desktop's "Use a web account to sign in" option.

Requirements:
  • Microsoft Entra ID P1 license or higher for users signing in via Entra ID
  • VM name 15 characters or fewer (Windows naming limit)
  • Windows 10/11 (build 20H1 or later) on the connecting machine
