Backrest on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Backrest restic backup manager on Ubuntu 24.04: web UI, scheduled backups, secure by default
Backrest is a self hosted web interface and orchestrator for restic, the fast, secure, deduplicating backup program. It gives restic a clean browser based UI for configuring backup repositories, backup plans and schedules, retention and forget policies, integrity checks, and one click restore or browse of any snapshot, all without touching the command line. Every operation is a real restic command, so your backups stay in the open, well documented restic repository format and can be restored with restic at any time.
What the cloudimg image gives you
- Backrest 1.14.1 behind an nginx reverse proxy on a hardened, fully patched Ubuntu 24.04 LTS base
- restic 0.19.1 preinstalled at the version Backrest expects, ready with nothing to download
- A per VM administrator password generated on first boot in a root only file, so no shared or default login ships in the image
- The Backrest server bound to loopback only, never exposed directly to the network
- A dedicated Azure data disk for the configuration, the operation log and any local restic repositories
- backrest and nginx as enabled systemd units, plus a paired step by step deploy guide
Licensing and pricing
Backrest is open source under GPL v3.0 and restic under BSD 2 Clause. There is no license fee. The cloudimg charge of 0.04 US dollars per vCPU hour covers packaging, security patching, image maintenance and 24/7 support.
Recommended size Standard_B2s for evaluation; size up for heavier workloads. NSG inbound should allow port 22 for SSH and port 80 for the web interface.
