BookLore on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS by cloudimg

by cloudimg

Self-hosted digital library for EPUB, PDF and comics with in-browser reading and sync.

BookLore is an open source, self-hosted digital library for people and teams with a serious book collection. Point it at your EPUB, PDF and comic files and it organises them into libraries and smart shelves, fetches cover art and rich metadata, and gives every member of your household or organisation their own account, their own shelves and their own reading progress. A built-in browser reader handles EPUB, PDF and comic formats with bookmarks and per-user position tracking, and an OPDS catalogue plus Kobo and KOReader sync let you carry the same library onto a dedicated e-reader.

This image delivers the whole platform assembled and tuned, so you have a working library within minutes of launch instead of assembling a Java runtime, a relational database, a front end build toolchain and a reverse proxy by hand. BookLore runs as a dedicated system user under systemd, behind nginx on port 80, backed by MariaDB. The database listens only on the loopback interface, the reverse proxy is tuned for the large headers, streaming uploads and live progress websockets the application actually uses, and the whole stack is memory tuned to run comfortably on a two vCPU virtual machine.

A dedicated data volume is attached and mounted for you, holding the book files, the generated covers and caches and the watched auto import folder, so your library grows on its own disk and can be expanded or snapshotted independently of the operating system.

BookLore ships with no default administrator account, and this image goes further by closing the first run window entirely. On the first boot of every instance a one shot service generates a fresh database password and administrator password unique to that instance, claims the administrator through the application's own one time setup endpoint before the web console is ever reachable, clears the inherited token signing key so the instance signs with a key of its own, and then verifies the new credentials work, that no default credential does, and that the setup endpoint is closed. The credentials are written to a root only file. No two deployments share a secret, there is no known default login, and no stranger can claim your library by reaching it first.

Systemd manages every component for automatic restarts and clean logging, the operating system is fully patched at build time and continues to receive unattended security updates, the complete corresponding source is shipped on the instance to satisfy the AGPL, and 24/7 cloudimg support is included.

This is a repackaged open source software product with additional charges for cloudimg support services. BookLore is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License version 3 and the corresponding source is provided on the instance. BookLore is a trademark of its respective owner.
