Campfire on Ubuntu 24.04

by cloudimg

Self-hosted team web chat with rooms, direct messages, files and full-text search.

Campfire on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Campfire is a web based chat application for teams, open sourced by 37signals under the MIT licence. This image runs it the officially supported way, from the upstream container image, pinned by both tag and digest so your deployment can never silently change underneath you.

What your team gets

  • Multiple rooms with access controls, so a conversation can be open to everyone or closed to a few
  • One to one direct messages
  • File attachments with inline previews
  • Full text search across the entire history, with the author, time and room shown on every hit
  • @mentions and Web Push notifications that reach people who have the tab closed
  • A simple bot API so scripts, alerts and services can post into a room

Everything, including every uploaded file, stays inside your own Azure subscription. There are no per seat licence fees and no third party service holding your message history.

Secure by default, with no credential to change

A fresh Campfire database leaves its first run wizard open, so whoever reaches the machine first can claim the administrator account. This image never ships in that state. On the first boot of every VM, before the instance is reachable, cloudimg generates a unique application secret and Web Push key pair and creates the single administrator itself with a random password, written to a root only file at 0600. Creating that account is what closes the wizard, and the boot fails rather than continue if the wizard is still answering. No two deployments share a credential, and there is no default login to rotate.

Licensing

MIT, free and open source. No per user or per seat software fee. The cloudimg charge of $0.04 per vCPU per hour covers packaging, security patching, image maintenance and 24/7 expert support.

Deployment

CPU only, no GPU required. Recommended size Standard_B2s for a small team; scale to Standard_B2ms or larger for a bigger team or heavy attachment traffic. Allow port 22 from your management network and port 80 from the networks that use the app. Campfire can also obtain its own Let's Encrypt certificate on port 443 once you point a DNS name at the VM. Prerequisites: an Azure subscription, a VNet and an SSH key.
