Euterpe on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

by cloudimg

Euterpe, self hosted music streaming for your own library, on Ubuntu 24.04

This is a repackaged open source software product wherein additional charges apply for cloudimg support services.

Euterpe - Self-Hosted Music Streaming Server by cloudimg

Deploy your own music streaming server on your own Azure infrastructure in minutes - no manual compilation, no dependency hunting, no shared credentials. This image delivers Euterpe 1.6.3 fully installed behind an nginx reverse proxy, so a working music server answers the moment the VM finishes booting.

Euterpe indexes a music library you already own, reads the tags and cover art out of your own files, and streams them back through a clean browser player, a documented REST API, and a Subsonic-compatible API that works with a wide range of third-party mobile clients. Your collection stays on infrastructure you control, and nothing about your listening leaves the machine.

The Library Ships Empty, By Design

This is a server for music you already own. No recordings of any kind are included in or distributed with this image. Copy your own files into the library directory, or point the configuration at a data disk you attach, and Euterpe indexes them automatically, groups them by artist and album, and keeps watching for changes. You are responsible for holding the rights to whatever you put in your library.

Why This Image Instead of Manual Installation

Euterpe links against system audio-tagging and Unicode libraries, so installing it by hand means resolving a build toolchain, compiling with the right build tags, writing a systemd unit and configuring a reverse proxy. This image removes all of that:

  • Euterpe 1.6.3 compiled from the pinned upstream release tag against this operating system's own libraries, shipped as a plain unpacked binary that behaves predictably under security scanning
  • Web player, SQL migrations and HTML templates embedded in the single binary, with an embedded SQLite index and no external database to maintain
  • An nginx reverse proxy on port 80, ready for your TLS certificate, passing byte-range requests straight through so seeking inside a track works
  • Secure by default: nothing at all listens on the public port in the shipped image, and the server cannot start until first boot has generated this machine's own credentials
  • Every entry point authenticated - the browser player, the REST API by password or bearer token, and the Subsonic API used by mobile clients
  • Ongoing expert support: 24/7 cloudimg engineers handle upgrades, TLS setup and library configuration

Secure By Default

There is no default password and nothing sensitive is baked into the image. The server binds only to loopback, no public listener exists in the shipped image at all, and the service is gated so it cannot start before first boot has written this machine's own administrator password and its own token-signing secret. Only then is the public site opened. Guessed credentials, wrong passwords and forged tokens are all rejected. The credentials for the machine are written to a root-only file, and the login banner points you at them.

Application Stack

Euterpe runs as an unprivileged service user, bound to loopback and reverse proxied by nginx on port 80. Its SQLite index, its configuration and your music library sit on the operating system disk by default, and the configuration can point at any additional path, including a data disk you attach. Features include browsing and search across artists, albums and tracks, playback in the browser with a persistent player, album artwork read from your own files, whole-album download as a zip, playlists, API tokens for scripted access and long-lived mobile sign-ins, and QR-code device pairing. Automatic artwork lookup from external services is available but switched off by default, so a fresh appliance makes no outbound requests.

Licensing and Pricing

Euterpe is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 3 and is free; there is no per-seat fee. The cloudimg charge of 0.04 US dollars per vCPU hour covers packaging, security patching, image maintenance, and 24/7 expert support. The licence text, a written offer for the corresponding source naming the exact upstream tag and commit, and full third-party notices all ship on the image.

cloudimg Support

24/7 technical support by email covers deployment, upgrades, TLS setup, library configuration and mobile client pairing. Critical issues receive a one-hour average response time.
