Lightweight self-hosted S3-compatible object storage with per-VM keys, fronted by TLS.
Garage on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
Garage is a lightweight, self-hosted, S3 compatible distributed object storage server written in Rust by Deuxfleurs. It is designed to be simple to operate and efficient on commodity hardware, exposing the Amazon S3 wire protocol so tools written for S3 (aws-cli, any aws-sdk, Restic, rclone, backup agents, static-site tooling, data pipelines) work against it without modification. This cloudimg image runs a complete single-node Garage store on one virtual machine.
Secure by default
The Garage process binds every listener to loopback. An nginx TLS front publishes the S3 API on port 3900 (AWS SigV4 authentication, region `garage`), an optional static web bucket endpoint on port 3902, and the token-gated admin API on port 3903. On first boot the image generates a per-VM S3 access key and secret key, an admin API token, a metrics token, an RPC secret, and a TLS certificate bound to the VM. No two virtual machines ever share credentials and there is no default login.
What is included
- Garage 2.3.0 (latest stable, installed from the official static binary and checksum pinned)
- Single-node cluster (replication factor 1) with the storage layout applied automatically at first boot
- A dedicated 40 GiB data volume mounted at /var/lib/garage for object metadata and data
- nginx TLS front for the S3 API, the web bucket endpoint and the admin API
- AWS CLI v2 preinstalled for command-line S3 operations
- Ubuntu 24.04 LTS base with the latest security patches applied at build time
