Gibbon School MIS on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
by cloudimg
Self hosted school management system over HTTPS, with a unique admin password per VM.
Gibbon is a free and open source school management platform, built for teachers, students, parents and school leaders, and used by schools around the world. It brings the whole administrative side of a school into one web application: student records and enrolment, the timetable and course catalogue, attendance by day and by period, the teacher markbook and reports, behaviour and pastoral care, a school calendar and student alerts, planners and homework, admissions and applications, library, finance and billing, staff records, and a portal where parents and students follow their own timetables, grades and attendance.
This cloudimg image delivers the official Gibbon v30.0.01 release fully installed on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Apache 2.4 serves the application over HTTPS with PHP 8.3, backed by a MySQL 8.0 database bound to localhost. The database is installed during the image build from the command line, so Gibbon's setup wizard is never reachable on your VM and there is nothing to configure before you sign in.
The image ships no default, shared or published credential. Gibbon's own schema seeds no user accounts at all, and the single administrator this image creates is given a password that is generated freshly on each VM's first boot, alongside the database password, the MySQL maintenance credential and the HTTPS certificate. Those values are written to a file readable only by root. Password reset and notification links always point at the VM's own address rather than at a hostname supplied by a browser, and an Azure public IP that changes across a stop and start is picked up automatically. Only SSH and HTTPS are reachable from outside; port 80 issues a permanent redirect to HTTPS. No demo or sample school data is installed, so you start from a clean system.
