Gramps Web is the self hosted, collaborative way to research a family tree. It puts the Gramps genealogical database behind a modern browser interface, so a family or a research group can build one shared tree together instead of emailing files around. You get people, families, events, places, sources, citations, notes, repositories and media in a single connected record set, an interactive pedigree and relationship view, a map of the places in your tree, full text search across everything, and reports you can generate on demand.

This image delivers Gramps Web fully installed and hardened, so you have a working genealogy platform within minutes of launch instead of assembling a Python environment, a WSGI server, a task queue and a reverse proxy by hand. The REST API runs in a dedicated Python virtual environment served by gunicorn, bound to the loopback interface and reverse proxied behind nginx on port 80. A background worker handles the slow jobs, so importing a large GEDCOM, generating a report, exporting your tree or processing media never blocks the interface. An unauthenticated health endpoint is provided for load balancer probes.

Gramps Web ships with no administrator account, and upstream leaves self registration open by default, which means the first stranger to find your instance could create an account on it. This image closes that. On the first boot of every instance a one shot service generates a fresh session signing key and a fresh owner password unique to that instance, creates exactly one owner account before the web port is ever opened, and writes the credentials to a root only file. Self registration is disabled, and first boot refuses to complete unless the registration endpoint actually rejects new sign ups and exactly one account exists. No shared or default password ever ships in the image, and there is no known default login.

The tree you sign in to is empty and it is yours. Bring your existing research in from GEDCOM or Gramps XML, or start entering people straight away, and add the rest of the family as further accounts from the owner settings page with the access level you choose for each of them.

Systemd manages the API, the background worker, nginx and Redis for automatic restarts and clean logging, the OS is fully patched at build time and continues to receive unattended security updates, and 24/7 cloudimg support is included.
