Liwan Analytics on Ubuntu 24.04 by cloudimg
Liwan is a lightweight, privacy-first web analytics server and a self-hosted alternative to Google Analytics. It measures pageviews, unique visitors, referrers, entry and exit pages, UTM campaigns, browsers, platforms and device types, and presents them on a dashboard that updates in real time. Tracking is cookieless and uses no persistent or cross-site identifiers, so it needs no cookie banner and never profiles individuals, and a bundled bot and referrer-spam list keeps automated traffic out of your figures.
You add a site by creating an entity and a project, then dropping a single tracking script of about 1.7KB (under 1KB compressed) into your pages. The script is served by Liwan itself, so no third-party script runs on your site and no visitor data leaves your VM.
The cloudimg image runs Liwan 1.6.0 as a single statically-linked Rust binary under systemd behind an nginx reverse proxy on port 80, with embedded SQLite and DuckDB datastores on a dedicated Azure data disk. Backed by 24/7 expert support.
Dedicated Data Disk
Your analytics history lives on a dedicated, independently resizable Azure data disk mounted at /var/lib/liwan, separate from the OS disk and re-provisioned with every VM. SQLite holds users, projects and settings; DuckDB holds the pageview events, which is what lets Liwan aggregate large event volumes for a dashboard query quickly.
Secure By Default
No shared or default credential ships in this image. Upstream Liwan has no default account: a fresh instance mints a one-time setup link, and whoever opens it first becomes the administrator. cloudimg closes that race. A unique 32-character administrator password is generated on first boot and written to a root-only file, and the account is created before the server is ever started, so no setup token is ever minted and the unauthenticated setup endpoint rejects every request for the life of the instance. The service is gated on a bootstrap marker and will not start until that account exists. The Liwan backend is bound to 127.0.0.1 so nginx on port 80 is the single entry point; front it with TLS for any public deployment.
