MistServer on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
by cloudimg
MistServer is a broadcast-grade streaming server delivering HLS, DASH, WebRTC and HTTP output.
MistServer is a full-featured, broadcast-grade open source streaming media server. It ingests a live feed from any publisher over RTMP (and RTSP, SRT, HLS and more) and republishes it in real time as HLS, MPEG-DASH, WebRTC, progressive HTTP, MP4 and RTMP for low latency playback in browsers and native players, all driven by the MistController web management interface with a JSON API for automation. This image delivers it fully installed and secured so a working ingest and multi protocol playback endpoint is operational within minutes of launch, with no manual package installation and no service configuration required.
Unlike a bare deployment, this image is secure by default. An unprotected media server hands an attacker full control, so this image generates three independent secrets on each virtual machine's first boot, written to a root only file: a MistServer administrator password for the management interface and API, an HTTP Basic credential that protects the network facing management surface, and a random passphrase that every RTMP publisher must supply to push a stream. There are no shared or default credentials and nothing is baked into the image, so no two deployments are ever the same. The management interface is bound to the loopback interface and reverse proxied over HTTPS by nginx with a self signed certificate that is regenerated per virtual machine, and it returns an unauthorized response until the administrator credential is supplied. The service runs as an unprivileged system user under systemd for automatic restarts and clean logging.
The image includes ffmpeg and an end to end self test tool that publishes a short test pattern over the signed RTMP endpoint, pulls it back over the HTTP output as MPEG transport stream and HLS, authenticates the management API, and confirms the authentication rules all behave. RTMP ingest is on port 1935, the multi protocol HTTP output is on port 8080, and the HTTPS management interface is on port 443.
