Oracle Linux 10 Minimal
by cloudimg
A lean, fully patched RHEL 10 compatible base cut to Oracle's core package group for Azure.
Oracle Linux 10, minimal package profile
Oracle Linux is a free, enterprise grade Linux distribution built by Oracle to be binary compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10, shipping both the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel and the Red Hat Compatible Kernel. This image is the minimal package profile variant: it keeps Oracle's own core package group, which Oracle describes as a minimal host installation, plus what an Azure virtual machine needs to be provisioned, networked, patched and managed, and removes everything else. The build refuses to capture if any installed package falls outside that contract, and a package profile file on the image lists every removed package so any of it can be added back with one dnf command. The image tracks the Oracle Linux 10 major release on Oracle's rolling repositories and was patched to the current point release at build time.
What was removed
- Packages outside Oracle's core group: Perl, the LLVM libraries, binutils, fonts, spell checking dictionaries and language packs, man pages, bind-utils, wget, the GeoIP databases, sos, tuned, the NFS client and rpcbind, and the iSCSI initiator
- Packages for hardware an Azure VM does not have: CPU microcode, Bluetooth, the flash programmer, the udisks2 disk manager stack, exFAT and TPM command line tools, X11 keyboard layouts and the mdadm RAID daemon
- Kept on purpose: kdump, firewalld, SELinux, fwupd, linux-firmware (required by the UEK modules), cloud-init, the Azure Linux Agent and the Hyper-V KVP daemon
Secure and current at capture
Every available update is applied at build time and again immediately before capture, and a gate blocks capture if any update remains outstanding. dnf-automatic is installed and armed to apply all available updates on a timer, never rebooting on its own. No credential is baked into the image: root is locked, password authentication is disabled and access is only by the SSH key you supply. SSH host keys and the machine identity are regenerated per instance. SELinux is enforcing, firewalld is active and SSH on port 22 is the only network listener. The operating system disk keeps Oracle's Azure LVM layout, so the root volume can be grown in place.
