OpenL Tablets on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS by cloudimg

by cloudimg

Author Excel decision tables in a browser IDE and serve each ruleset as a secured API.

OpenL Tablets is an open source business rules management system. It keeps business logic where the people who own it can read it: rules are authored as decision tables, lookup tables and spreadsheets in ordinary Excel workbooks, kept under Git version control, and executed by a rules engine that publishes them as live APIs. A pricing analyst can open a rate table, change a band, run its tests and deploy it without a release of the surrounding application.

What you get. OpenL Tablets 6.4.0, both halves of the product, on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. OpenL Studio is the browser IDE for creating and editing rule projects, running and tracing tests, and managing project history and branches. Rule Services publishes every ruleset you deploy as a REST endpoint with an OpenAPI description and as a SOAP endpoint. Both run in a single Apache Tomcat 10.1 instance as a non-login service account on OpenJDK 21, bound to loopback, with nginx serving everything over HTTPS.

Secure by default, which this product needs. OpenL Tablets ships configured for local evaluation: its authentication mode defaults to single-user, which means no authentication at all, with the anonymous visitor holding administrator rights over the rules repository. This image forces multi-user authentication and generates the administrator password on each VM's first boot. Rule Services ships with its authentication disabled, and its only built-in alternative is JWT validation against an external identity provider, so this image places the rule endpoints behind HTTP Basic authentication at the TLS front door with a separate per-VM credential. Your rule endpoints are not an unauthenticated bypass of the locked IDE. The embedded user database, which upstream configures to open a network server on a routable address, is closed to local access only.

Hardened and empty. A default-deny host firewall leaves exactly three ports reachable: SSH, HTTP and HTTPS, and port 80 only redirects to HTTPS. No sample rule projects and no demo accounts ship: the design repository and the user database arrive empty, ready for your own rules. OpenJDK 21 and every other component come from the Ubuntu main archive, so the image keeps receiving security updates with no additional subscription.

Licensing and trademarks. OpenL Tablets is free software published under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0, with no subscription or licence key. OpenL Tablets is a trademark of its respective owner; cloudimg is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the OpenL Tablets project. The cloudimg charge of $0.04 per vCPU/hour covers packaging, hardening and 24/7 support.
