ParaView Server 6.1.1 on Ubuntu 24.04 | 24/7 Support by cloudimg

by cloudimg

Headless ParaView pvserver for remote, parallel scientific visualisation over a secure SSH tunnel.

ParaView Server on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

ParaView Server (pvserver) 6.1.1 is the headless back end of ParaView, the open source scientific data-analysis and visualisation application from Kitware. A ParaView desktop client connects to pvserver for remote and parallel rendering, so engineers place the server next to large CFD, FEA and climate result sets in the cloud and interact with them from a lightweight local client instead of copying terabytes of data down.

Secure by default

A stock pvserver listens on all interfaces with no authentication and renders whatever a connecting client sends, which is effectively unauthenticated remote access. This image closes that. pvserver is bound to loopback (127.0.0.1:11111) only, and a host firewall drops any traffic to port 11111 that does not arrive on the loopback interface. You reach it exactly as ParaView documents, over an SSH tunnel, so access is gated by the VM's own SSH authentication. There is no password or connect id to manage.

Headless rendering, no GPU

pvserver, pvpython and pvbatch render entirely headless through the system OSMesa software OpenGL library, so the appliance works on a plain Standard_B2s with no graphics hardware and no X server. The image ships a ready-to-render sample dataset and a self-test that connects a client to the server and renders it, proving the path on every first boot.

What is included

  • ParaView Server 6.1.1, the official Kitware prebuilt Linux binary, BSD-3-Clause licensed
  • pvserver bound to loopback, running as a dedicated non-root service account, gated on a first-boot marker
  • A host firewall that drops every non-loopback packet to port 11111
  • Headless OSMesa rendering and a shipped sample dataset
  • A fully patched Ubuntu 24.04 LTS security baseline at capture time, with unattended security updates enabled
  • 24/7 cloudimg support

Licensing

ParaView is free and open source under the BSD-3-Clause licence. There is no per-CPU or per-seat fee. The cloudimg charge covers packaging, security patching, image maintenance and 24/7 support.
