wanderer on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

by cloudimg

Self-hosted trail and GPS-route database with maps and search, secured and supported by cloudimg

wanderer on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

wanderer is an open source, self-hosted database for outdoor routes: upload or draw hiking, cycling and running trails on an interactive map, attach GPX tracks, waypoints, photos and notes, and keep every route together with its distance, elevation and duration in one private, searchable place. Group trails into lists, keep them private or share them, and find anything instantly across your whole collection.

cloudimg packages wanderer from the vendor's official containers, pinned by digest, on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS:

  • The SvelteKit web frontend and PocketBase backend (a single Go binary that embeds SQLite), on a private network behind an nginx reverse proxy on port 80
  • Meilisearch for fast full-text search over your trails, in production mode so every request requires a key
  • All datastores held in Docker volumes captured into the image, so the instance starts in seconds

Secure by default

The upstream project ships with open registration enabled and its search and backend keys set to public example values. cloudimg hardens every instance before the port is ever public: a unique Meilisearch master key, a unique PocketBase encryption key, a personal app account and a separate backend superuser, each with a random password, are generated on the first boot of every VM and never baked into the image. Open sign-up is switched off by default so a fresh instance is not world joinable. PocketBase and Meilisearch are bound to the internal network, the PocketBase admin console is kept off the public port, and unauthenticated writes are refused.

What you get

  • wanderer v0.20.0 from the official containers, pinned by digest, managed as one systemd service
  • A per-VM Meilisearch master key, PocketBase encryption key, app account and backend superuser generated at first boot, stored root-only
  • Open registration disabled by default and the admin console never public - no default login
  • A paired step-by-step deployment guide
  • Ongoing security patching and image maintenance
  • 24/7 expert cloudimg support

Licensing and pricing

wanderer is open source under the GPL-3.0 licence and is free to use. The cloudimg charge of $0.04 per vCPU per hour covers packaging, security patching, image maintenance and 24/7 support. Recommended size: Standard_B2s to start. wanderer is fronted by nginx on plain HTTP - front it with your own domain and TLS before production.
