Rocky Linux 9 Gen2 — Enterprise Linux for Azure

by Derek Coleman & Associates Corporation

Production-grade Rocky Linux 9 on Azure — 100% RHEL-compatible, zero licensing costs.

Rocky Linux 9 Gen2 — Enterprise Linux for Azure

A Gen2, Trusted-Launch-ready Rocky Linux 9 enterprise image, built and hardened for the Azure Marketplace. This is the security-forward datacenter variant of our Rocky Linux 9 line: it leads on Gen2 platform protection — vTPM-backed measured boot and Secure Boot — for organizations standardizing on a hardened enterprise Linux baseline. Rocky Linux is a 100% RHEL-compatible enterprise distribution with a 10-year lifecycle and no subscription cost, delivered here on Gen2.

Who this is for: Security and platform teams who require Trusted Launch as a baseline control across the fleet, datacenter operators standardizing enterprise Linux on Gen2 VMs, and compliance-driven organizations that mandate measured boot for every production host. (For lift-and-shift of RHEL/CentOS workloads, see our Rocky Linux 9 Server offer, which leads on RHEL compatibility.)

Target industries & use cases: Financial services, healthcare, government, defense, and telecom that enforce hardware-rooted boot integrity. Common workloads: hardened enterprise application tiers, regulated database hosts, golden-image foundations, and datacenter workloads where Secure Boot and vTPM are required controls.

Value proposition: Provisioning a Trusted-Launch enterprise Linux host on Azure normally means installing the Azure Linux Agent, enabling Secure Boot and vTPM, tuning SELinux, applying kernel CVEs, and passing Marketplace certification. This image does all of that for you:

  • Trusted Launch + Secure Boot enabled by default — Gen2 image with vTPM measured boot and signed boot per Microsoft’s OEM requirements; attestation at deploy
  • Automated trap-audit — every version is gated through an automated trap-audit that re-checks our documented build-pipeline fixes
  • Monthly patch cadence — each version is rebuilt from upstream Rocky Linux security updates within days of release, tracking RHEL 9 errata
  • Azure Linux Agent pre-installed — walinuxagent.service is running; custom-script and run-command work on first boot
  • Audit trail per release — build provenance and certification evidence retained

How this differs from rolling your own: A stock Rocky Gen2 image is Trusted-Launch-capable but ships with none of the enforced posture (Secure Boot validated, SELinux enforcing, root SSH disabled, auditd configured, serial-console exposure closed) that a security baseline requires. This image bakes and re-validates that posture every month and shares one playbook with our Rocky Linux 9 Server offer.

Recommended deployment: Standard_D2as_v5 or larger for general-purpose enterprise workloads; Standard_E2as_v5 or larger for memory-heavy databases. Deploy with Trusted Launch enabled for vTPM and Secure Boot. Premium SSD v2 for data disks. SSH key authentication required.

Azure integration: Trusted Launch + Secure Boot, Azure Linux Agent, Azure Attestation, Azure Monitor Agent, Azure Backup, Azure Disk Encryption, Azure Defender for Servers, and Azure VM Run Command all attach via standard extensions. Rocky Linux is free and open-source with no subscription required; standard Azure compute and storage rates apply.
